Namakaranam, or naming ceremony, is a newborn ritual that must be performed on the 10th or 12th day after the birth. This is one of the sixteen samskaras of human life. On the day of naamakaranam, the infant is bathed and dressed in new clothes. A priest suggests a suitable alphabet, based on the position of grahas at the time of the baby’s birth.
